The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum is nestled on the Essex River basin in Essex, MA. Its mission is to provide a center of education, preservation, and study of traditional wooden shipbuilding and the community that supported and sustained it for more than 350 years. The EHSSM embraces a vision that encompasses the skills, creativity, learning abilities, and connectedness to their environment of the Essex shipbuilders. We believe that building a clear understanding and appreciation of their unique craftsmanship serves as a valuable model for us today.
The EHSSM serves as a unique educational, historical and cultural institution in the heart of Essex County. With peaceful yet breath-taking views that change with the tides, our location is a sought-after location for artists from all over the area and country. Our educational programs include boat-building classes, hands-on, interpretive lessons in the traditional crafts connected with boat building for groups of all ages, as well as workshops in such trades as photography and blacksmithing. The EHSSM offers regular lectures and presentations from historians, boat-builders, authors, and the like. Many events and parties are hosted in the Waterline Center at the EHSSM, where artifacts share space with works in progress. The EHSSM introduced an artists membership option in 2016, an option which includes an annual parking pass to the property, discounts in our museum gift shop, as well as discounts to programs and events.
The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum is located at 66 Main Street, Essex, MA. Upcoming events, membership information and contact information can be found on our website,www.essexshipbuildingmuseum.org.
